History of 911

The first 911 system was installed in Haleyville, Alabama in February 1968 as a way to quickly connect a subscriber to the local police station.  This system did not identify the caller but did provide a means to access emergency services that had not previously been available.  This system was quickly adapted and improved by other telephone companies to become the E911 system which provides both caller location and identification.  A pioneering system was in place in Chicago by the mid-1970s providing both police and fire departments access to the source location of emergency calls.

GIS/Mapping and Addressing

The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office Graphical Information System (GIS), also known simply as mapping and addressing, creates and maintains spatial information to aid in the creation of maps and data analysis to support county departments and their customers.

The links for Business and Residential 911 address applications are below.  Please note that you will need to contact the Holmes County Building Department  regarding the land use application before we can process your address application.  The land use application must be paid, completed and approved by the building department before we can proceed.
